John Climacus’ teaching on freedom from anger and on meekness can be a light for the soul in dark times.
“If the Holy Spirit is peace of soul, as He is said to be and as He is in reality, and if anger is disturbance of heart, as it actually is and as it is said to be, then nothing so prevents His presence in us as anger.”

“At the fragrance of humility all anger and bitterness vanishes.” It is our humility towards God that generates grace for us. This type of humility is well-described in 1Peter 5:5-7 which says: “Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (see also Proverbs 3:5, Philippians 4:6-7, Psalms 37:7, 55:22, Isaiah 26:3-4, 55:7-9).
The fruit of the Spirit contains our peace and strength for overcoming anger and bitterness (Galatians 5:22-23).
